One of hisgreat grand daughters, Mary Ann Fields wrote a narrat
ive from her childHood recollections that were passed down in th
e family about him. she stated thathe was "A very large man, o
ver six feet tall, and weighed 225 pounds, broad shouldered, wel
l built, had a powerful voice, had coarse straight hair which st
ood straight on his Head, fair complextion, blue eyes, he was co
nsidered avery powerful man." (Annals of Tazewell County, Virgi
nia by John Newton Harmon. pp 374-375. James Maxwell was the fi
rst sheriff of Tazewell County, Virginia. Two of his young chil
dren (jennie and Mattie) were massacred by Indians circa 1781 o
r 1782... Some published accounts incorrectly state these werec
hildren of Robert Maxwell.) James Maxwell's will was written 2
8 August,1820, and proved in Tazewell County Court on 27 May, 1
821. His daughter, Elizabeth (Marrs) was one of his heirs.
