Gray Bynum (20 Dec 1737 -22 Feb 1814) is perhaps the most thoro
ughly documented of the Bynums of his generation. His birth an
d death dates were preserved in a family Bible, alongwith the n
ames of his children and his marriage to Margaret Hampton on 2 A
pr 1761. He first appears as the Grantee of his father in 1762
, but moved across the border into North Carolina by the late 17
60's where he settled in the part of Rowan County that became Su
rry, the Stokes County. Gray Bynum served in the North Carolin
a Assembly and held a number of county offices. His will date
d 4 December 1813 in Stokes county, named eight children, two o
f whom had predeceased him: Mary Harding (Carmichael, Garner) J
ohn, Benjamin Martha (Blume), Sarah (Fortner), Nancy Ann Wynne (
Bowman) Gray, and Hampton. the Bible gives the names of additio
nal four children who died in childHood: William, Dicey, Ameli
a and Elizabeth. His wife Margaret, was the daughter ofAnthon
y Hampton and Elizabeth Preston and the sister of Revolutionar
y War General Wade Hampton, all of whose names appear among th
e descendants of thisfamily.
