The land on which Middletown is situated, and thetract immediat
ely to the North were taken up by Adam Peterson in 1678, who, o
n the 14th of March, 1686, also took out a warrant for two hundr
ed acres ona neck called New Wells, between the branches of th
e Head-watersof Drawyer'sCreek. Upon his death the property ap
pears not to have been divided, but was mainly in possession o
f Andrew Peterson, who died in January, 1741; and onMarch 29, 1
742, thomas Noxon, Jehu Curtis, John Finney, John Goodin and Joh
n McCoole were appointed to divide the property. Adam Peterso
n left two sons. Andrew and Adam, and a daughter, Hermania, wh
o married --Von Bebber and died comparatively young, leaving a
s children, Jacob, Garrett, Andrew, Adam, Elinor and Elizabeth
. In this division of 1742 these heirs of Hermania Von Bebber r
eceived one-rifth of the estate. Andrew Peterson died in Januar
y, 1741 leaving a widow (his third wife). Hester, who subsequen
tly became the wifeof David Witherspoon, and who, in 1742, wa
s appointed the guardian of the children of Andrew, who were Hen
ry, Andrew, Catalina, Jacob, Ester and Mary. the remaining port
ion of the Adam Peterson lands were divided between Adam, the so
n of Adam, and the children of Andrew. Mary Peterson, the young
est daughter of Andrew, received in the division No. 7, a trac
t of two hundred and five acres, three acres of which were sol
d August 19, 1790 to Rev. Philip Reading. Henry Peterson; son o
f Andrew, became a physician and Jun 13, 1790, sold part of hi
s portion of his father's estate to Jesse Higgins, of Damascus M
illss.
