Historical note:
James Greenleaf, son of Simon and Hannah (Kingman) Greenleaf, wa
s born June 15 1814. He attended Dartmouth College. After grad
uating, Greenleaf moved to New Orleans and in 1851 formed a part
nership with Daniel Hubbard who wasa commission merchant, speci
alizing in the cotton trade. Greenleaf and hubbard began thei
r association with John A. Burnham, a Boston-based agent, repres
enting numerous Norther textile mills. Greenleaf and Hubbard pu
rchased cotton to meet the needs of mills, negotiated prices an
d other financial terms,arranged for transportation of cotton f
rom New Orleans to Northern ports, and communicated news about t
he New Orleans' cotton market with mills, manufacturing companie
s, and their agents.
Greenleaf's Norther family ties were strong. He married Mary Lo
ngfellow, daughter of Stephen and Zilpah (Wadsworth) Longfellow
. While living in New Orleans, the Greenleaf's traveled to Camb
ridge, Massachusetts, during the summer months to be near thei
r relatives. Eventually, they built a hhouse in Cambridge. A s
taunch Union man, the partnership of Greenleaf and Hubbard disso
lved in May 1860 due to tensions prevedingthe Civil War. At th
e outbreak of war, Greenleaf's property in New Orleans was seize
d, but was restored to him at the close of the hostilities. Gre
enleaf died suddenly on August 22 1865.
