St. James Parish Church, Cambridge, Massachusetts
"St. James's was founded in1864 by two laymen (Samuel Batchelde
r and George Dexter), a retired clergyman, the Rev. Andrew Crosw
ell, and his wife, Caroline Augusta Croswell. All four had bee
n parishioners at Christ Church in nearby Harvard Square and sha
red a desire to start an Episcopal mission in the rough and nois
y cattle marketarea of North Cambridge.
Mary Longellow Greenlear (1816-1902) was one of thenew Church'
s most faithful supporters. Her brother was the poet, Henry Wad
worth Longfellow...Widow to the wealthy merchant, Jame Greenleaf
, she was also Caroline Croswell's sister-in-law. The churh's G
reenleaf window, is an early 20th century tribute to the life an
d work of this generous and remarkablepatron of St. James's. I
t was her generosity that funded both the entire original churc
h building, called the "Chapel", including furnishings, 1870-7
1and the entire chancel of the new Church, begun in 1888 and de
signed by the New York architec, Henry M. Congdon.
