Note

From "A sketch of the life and Writings of Henry Wadsworth Longf
ellow" 1886page 2
"Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the second son of the family, wh
ichcontained four sons and four daughters. He took his name fr
om his mother's brother, Lieutenant Henry Wadsworth, whose heroi
c death was a fresh and tendermemory in the family. Two year
s and a half before, on the night of September 4, 1804, he had b
een second in command of the bomb-ketch Intrepid, which was fitt
ed up as an "infernal", and sent stealthily into the harbor of T
ripoli to blow up the enemy's fleet. The officers and crew wer
e to apply the match and escape in the boats; but when the Intre
pid was still a quarter of a mile from her destination, the watc
hing men in the American fleet outside saw asudden line of ligh
t; in a moment a column of fire shot up from the vessel, and wit
h a tremendous explosion bombs burst in every direction, and th
e masts and rigging few into the air. Every soul on board peris
hed. "
