Stephen (4) son of Stephen (3) was born in Gorham in 1776, and w
as the fatherof Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet. Stephe
n (4) entered Harvard College in 1794, and graduated in 1798. D
aniel Appleton White, a college friend, said of him, that "he wa
s evidently a well-bred gentelman when he left the paternal mans
ion for the university. He seemed to breathe the atmosphere o
f purity as his native element; while his bright intelligence, b
uoyant spirits, and social warmth diffused a sunshine of joy tha
t made his presence always gladsome". He graduated with rank an
d honors. Returning to Portland, he entered the law-office of S
almon Chase (an uncle of Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase), and i
n 1804 married Zilpah, eldest daughter of Gen Peleg Wadsworth
. Stephen's sister, Abigail Longfellow, had married Samuel Step
henson, a rich merchant of Portland. In the winter of 1806-7, M
r. Stephenson having gone to theWest Indies on business, his wi
fe invited her brother Stephen and his wife tospend the winte
r at her house, which they did; and there Henry Wadsworth Longfe
llow was born, Feb 27 1807. He was named for his uncle Lieut. H
enry Wadsworth of the Unaited States navy, who lost his life a
t Tripoli on the nightof Sept 4, 1804, in a gallant attempt t
o destroy the enemy's flotilla by a fire-ship."
