James Bailey was born December 15, 1825 in Estern Tennessee, an
d died August19 1892 at his home in Center,Mississippi, near Ko
sciusko, Attala County, Mississippi. He is buried in the Cente
r community cemetery, and his grave is marked with a large tombs
tone which my mother placed there at the same time that she ha
d markers set up at the graves of my father and my grandmother B
ailey's in the cemetery at Devine, Texas. The tombstones of m
y grandparents areidentical, having been made by the same stone
-mason.
Mary Ann Bailey, nee Mary Ann Curtis, was born in the State of A
labama on December 14, 1825 and died April 9, 1908 at Devine, Me
dina County, Texas and is buried in the Bailey family burial lo
t in the Evergreen Cemetery there.
James Bailey was a Civil War veteran, and in 1864 he was give
n a furlow to return home to attend the funeral of his daughter
, Hariett, and because of his illness of diarrhea, caused by th
e food he had eaten, his eldest son, Tom, volunteered for milita
ry service, and was accepted to serve instead of his father, Jam
es Bailey. Tom was sixteen years of age at the time, but becaus
e of thedesperate need of theConfederate army mere youths wer
e taken.
