Geography:-
Oldham lies in the foothills of the Pennines, seven miles North-
east of Manchester. It is made up of seven small townships whic
h merged in 1974 to create the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham
, one of the ten districts of Greater Manchester.
Oldham itself is at the borough's centre, with Chadderton and Fa
ilsworth to the West and south-West, Shaw and Royton to the nort
h and Lees and Saddleworth to the North-east.
All but Saddleworth are products of the borough's roots as a cot
ton-spinning centre. Much ofthe industrial legacy remains thou
gh most of the cotton mills have been demolished. Red-brick hou
sing predominates and the borough merges with Manchesteritsel
f to the south-West, Rochdale to the North-West and Tameside t
o thesouth.
Saddleworth, which unlike the rest of Lancashire borough was unt
il 1974 in the West Riding of Yorkshire, is a collection of vill
ages in the steep-sided valleys which rise up to Pennine moorlan
d. Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross,Denshaw and Greenfield have a di
fferent industrial history as the many stonethree-storey weaver
's cottages show.
COMMUNICATIONS
Oldham lies at the heart of the North-West's motorway network
. The A627(M) and Oldham by-pass leadmotorists to the centre o
f the borough from the M62.
History:-
Oldham's wealth was built on cotton spinning and the manufactur
e of textile machinery. In its heyDay it was the greatest cotto
n-spinning town in the world, boastingmore spindles than the wh
ole of the United States and providing a home to the most famou
s of all textiel machinery makers, Platt Bros.
It was also the home of other world-famous companies - electricl
a engineer Ferranti and plane-maker A V Roe, which became part o
f British Aerospace.
The cotton industry gradually declined; Ferranti is now a shado
w of its former self. British Aerospace is still a major employ
er, though it, too, has had to shed jobs.
