, Nov 7 1838.She attended the Public School and Academy at Hin
sdale until she was fourteen years old. She then taught her fir
st school at Charlemont, Mass., boardingwith her uncle, Orland
o M. Hawkes. She taught for 16 weeks at $1.25 a week,making $2
0.00 $12.00 of which she gave to her father, and $8.00 she spen
ton herself for clothes. At the age of 17 she came West with h
er father's family and taught the first school in Rosemond in he
r father's unfinished housein the summer of 1856. It was a pri
vate school. In 1857 she taught the first school at Pana, thre
e months at $20. per month. In the same year she taught nine mo
nths at Taylorville, first as an assistant t $25.00 a month, bu
t was after the first term made principal at $3.00 per pupil fo
r a three months'term. She boarded most of the time with Judg

ols.
In the fall of 1859 the people of Rosemond organized a Lyceum, t
hat met every FriDay night and was continued through the winter
. When the officers wereelected, in a spirit of banter and fun
, Miss Ophelia Putnam was nominated for President and Miss Matti
e Russell for Secretary and by a large majority they were electe
d. In response to the spirit in which they were elected, they a
ccepted the positions, and the ease and graceful manner in whic
h the president-elect acknowledged the compliment in a neat litt
le speech quite won the heart of at least one unsophisticated yo
uth in the assembly, and he forthwithbecame her most ardent adm
irer. And strange to tell in spite of stormy weather, Old Cupi
d tied at least their hearts together. They were engaged to b
emarried the night of 23 march 1861, and were married 7 nov 186
