"Tait was originally anickname. Beede, tells us that Ethelberg
a, daughter of Ethelbert, king of Kent was called "Tate' (fem) a
nd nine indivules name "Tat" (masc.) are recordedin Birch's Car
tularium Saxonicum. The word, meaning 'glad' or 'cheerful' occu
rs in 'Old Norse', as teitr, and as a proper name, Teitr, occur
s severaltimes in the Icelandic Landnamabok. A debt due by th
e king is recorded paidto Thomas dictus Tayt in 1329. Betwee
n 1362 and 1370 there were a number ofentries of payment of pen
sion to John Tayt, Clerk wo appears to have been connected wit
h the hospital of Montrose. Alexander Tayt was burgess of Edinb
urgh, 1381. Adam Tayte who had a safe conduct to travel in Engl
and in 1424, may be the Adam Tayt, scutifer, a charter witness i
n Paisley, 1432. Andrew Tait was master of the Flesher Craft o
f Edinburgh, 1490, and another Andrew Tayt was one of the preamb
ulators of the boundries of Yochry and Achbrady, 1492.Robert T
ait was tenant of the land of Wydsys in 1532 (Rental), Christi
e Tett and Donald Taitt were tenants under Abbey of Kelso, 1567
. The name alsoappears in Orkney in 1575. A family of the nam
e were proprietors of the barony of Cherrytrees in 1605, and Tai
t of Prin, an ancient family of Tweeddale,ended in two heiresse
s, Margaret and Anne, one of whom married a Horsburgh ofthat Il
k. Arhibold Campbell Tait (1811-1822), born in Edinburgh, and b
ecame Archibishop of Canterbury."
