Note

MM writes (8/15/2000): "Jonathan's mother was a Hillier from Lam
aline. (Thisinformation was given me by my mother, Jonathan'
s granddaughter). Jonathan'smother was obviously a daughter o
f John Hillier 1783. That she was not a daughter of Deborah (Ma
lzard - ed.) (Born cca. 1794) was indicated to me by Jane (Burto
n) Spencer, Jonathan's granddaughter, who received the informati
onfrom her aunt, Ester (Burton) Pike, Jonathan's eldest child."
"For many reasons I know the Hillier girl's mother must have bee
n a Bonnell. Members of my family have inherited from Jonatha
n Burton's family the Bonnell family nose.Bonnell longevity, B
onnell ambidexterity, and Bonnell handwirting. (The sameBonnel
l features are found in Cupids Bonnell descendants)."
MM, ltr, recd 3?31/200: "There is absolutely no reason to believ
e that the name of Hillier girl who married Jonathan (or James
) Burton Sr. was Julia. Again, a mistake in Grand Bank-Fortun
e copied records led to this assumption. (Lench copied, erroneou
sly, that a Jonathan and Esther Burton of Fortune had a Julia
. therewas a Julie with another surname two lines down in th
e records, and so thisname got mixed up with Jonathan Jr., an
d Jane Burton's daughter Mary Ann whowas born February 13, 187
3 (not Julia.) (Poor little Mary Ann did not get recorded by Len
ch at all. Her grandson in Hartford, Connecticut, supplied Mar
y Ann's birthdate). "At first I thought Jonathan Burton's mooth
er may have been Julia, but when this error came to light, I rea
lized there was no basis for that name (i.e. Julia) at all. I u
sed it with a big question mark but someone left out the questio
n mark, apparently (I wish researchers would not make assumption
s). (from http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/i/c/Jer
ome-J-Michael/BOOK-0001/0003-0002.html
"Someone even had her listed as dyingin 1899! The Julia who die
d in 1899 was Julia (Hillier) King born 1844 of John and Susan H
illier.
(By the way, Jonathan Burton's (Jr) mother (maiden nameHillier
) could have been Amelia, Mary Ann, Bertha or Jane - since he na
medhis daughters those names. Surely one would have been name
d after his other, don't you thin?)"
The fact that the mother of Jonathan Burton Jr. was a Hillier wa
s confirmed by Jonathan's granddaughter Janet (Mayo) Hillier (19
00-1987) (MM)
Re: Could (Julia?) Hillier have been the daughter of Deb
orah Malzard?
MM writes 'Deborah (Malzard?) Hillier, wife of John Hillier I, w
as born around 1794. she would have been too young to be the mo
ther of......Hillier who married the senior Burton. sinch Jonat
han Burton was born in 1823, his mother (the Hillier girl) was p
rbably born around 1805 or 1806. So Deborah could not have bee
n her mother.
