GILBERT LACY, ESQUR.
as owner.
We have noticed that Mr. Gilbert Lacy was the lessee of the Dov
e House from apparently the date of its puchase by the Neson fam
ily in the year1459.
This Gilbert Lacy was the second son of John Lacy of Cromwelbott
om, Lord of the Manor of Southowram. Gilbert, after his father'
s death in 1474, suceeded, probably by gift from his father, t
o the ownership of the manor of Cromewelbottom, for we fined acc
ording to Watson's History, than an old deed shows that he and h
is wife Joan in 1481-2 Granted that manor on trust to VicarSymm
es of Halifax.
Gilbert Lacy's wife was the heiress apparently of the oldfamil
y of the Soothils of Brearley.
Watson on another page of his book saysthat Gilbert Lacy marrie
d a lady whose Christian name was Isabel. If this be correct h
e was twice married, but Joan is the name both in the deed of 14
81-82 and in his will in 1492.
From the Dodsworth MSS we learn that in the 2ndyear of King Ric
hard III., to the "Court of Cromwelbottom came Gilbert Lacyin h
is proper person and did fealty for all his messuages and land
s that helately pruchased of Thomas Nelsohn, and acknowledged h
e held them by fealtyand 5s rent.
...Perhaps before his marriage with Joan Soothil, by which he be
came possessed of Brearley Hall, he may personally have reside
d at and occupied Dove House. If so, it may have been he who de
corated the Hall of the latter house with the curious ornamena
l painting, still partially remaining,on the oak wainscot.....
Gilbert Lacy, of Brearley, and owner of Dove House, diedin th
e year 1492. (His will may be found in Messrs. Clay and Crossle
ys "Halifax Wills," vol I., No 48). He left "to the necessitie
s and ornaments of the Parish Church of Halifax," 20s., and to e
ach priest present at his obsequies 12d. He appointed his wif
e Joan and son Arthur the executors of his will.Arthur was a p
riest. Gilbert's eldest son.
