Imigrated to America with his father, Wm Richardson III (See fat

WILLIAM RICHARDSON IV (1854-1938)
He was born 4 Apr 1854 at Newton, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire Scotla
nd a son of William Richardson III and Joanna Fotheringham. Hi
s parents were among the first 18 converts to be baptizedby Par
ley P Pratt in Scotland in the year of 1848. They were devout i
n their beliefs and desired strongly to come to America. When W
illiam was about2 years old, he became seriously ill with smal
l pox and his parents called inthe Elders to give him a blessin
g. He was promised he would get well and ashe grew up, if he w
ould keep the commandments, he would go to Zion and become a fat
her in Israel.
The family left for America ion 1856 and after landingin New Yo
rk, went to Pennsylvania where they stayed for 4 years worKing i
nthe coal mines to get enough money to continue their trip West
. They finally moved to Illinois where they stayed 3 years an
d then were able to leave forUtah in June 1863. They arrived i
n Salt Lake on 17 Oct 1863 and were advised by Brigham Young t
o settle in Heber where they arrived 23 Oct 1863.
In 1871 when William was 17, he was called to go to Salt Lake an
d haul marble for the Salt Lake Temple. He received food and cl
othing but donated his labor andteam of oxen and wagon. One da
y his wagon got stuck in a ditch and broke the wagon tongue. H
e swore and was overheard by Brigham Young who called him asid
e and told him if he would be faithful and keep the commandment
s he would live to see the temple completed and would work in it
. This he literallysaw fulfilled as he later was proxy in th
e temple for hundreds of names.
William's parents moved to Center Creek area in 1874 and took u
p a large tract of land near the mouth of the canyon. On 1 Ja
n 1876 William married Jane HoweMuir. She was born 5 July 185
4 in Scotland a daughter of George and Margaret Hanna Muir. T
o William and Jane were born nine children; Margaret Ann, born 1
9 aug 1874, Jeanette Elizabeth, born 2 Oct 1876, Walter R., bor
n 17 Oct1879, James William, born 9 Aug 1880, Rosa HallaDay, bo
rn 23 Apr 1885, Kate,born 30 dec 1888, George Muir, born 23 Au
g 1892, Archibald Leslie, born 4 Jan1894 and Ralph born 24 Se
p 1897. They all settled in the Center Creek area.In oct 190
4 William sold his farm in Center Creek and moved to Lindon, Uta
h in Utah County and in 1922 moved to Vernal, Utah in the smal
l community of Naples, Unitah County. Jane spent many of her ea
rly years in Sanpete Co. after coming to America. She was o
n 2 years old when the family crossed the plains, walKing as muc
h as she could. It was when her parents moved to Heber,she me
t and married William in 1876. Jane was very industrious and wo
uldspin her own yarn, maKing their own clothing. She also mad
e her own soap andpaint as well as quilts and carpets. Her hou
se was always kept neat and spotless. She worked in the Primar
y and Relief Society in various wards where she lived. She die
d 2 May 1927 in Vernal, Ut. Shortly after her death, William w
as called on a special mission to work in the Manti Temple. Aft
er completing the call he returned to Vernal where he died 10 ye
ars after his wifedied, on 23 Jun 1937 in Vernal.
