He kept Journals of his life's history, recording all events, na
mes, dates, and places in a legible handwriting. At his death i
n 1904, his 2nd son, John T., took the Journals for safekeeping
. When John T. died in Oct. 1930, one of his sons, William Mui
r Richardson, took one of the Journals into his care. One othe
r Journal went into the keeping of John Thornton, William's olde
r brother. The first Journal covered his early years in Scotlan
d, and his later experiences, when emigrating to America, workin
g in the Penna. coal mines and other places in Penna. and Ill.
, trying to get enough money to supporthis family plus some ext
ra so they could travel on to Utah. They left Scotland in earl
y 1854 and finally arrived in SLC in late 1863. The Journal end
ed just before his death. (The other Journal covered some of th
e same events in his life, but he mentioned some others and he a
lso wrote some of his thoughts and philosophies.) In 1945, Will
iam Muir Richardson's youngest daughter,Carol, made a typed cop
y of the first Journal, under the direction of her mother, Clara
, who interpreted some of the place names (which had been badl
y misspelled, as William was not an educated man.) However, som
e of the place names remained undecipherable. For many years ex
isting Family Group Sheets ofthis family had wrong dates and bi
rthplaces for some of the children, whicherrors were compounde
d by those who made copies, and guessed again at some ofthe spe
llings. Carol later married Kenward McKinney, who soon joined th
e Church. She worked for many years on his genealogy lines, an
d sporadically collected data on her own that other relatives ha
d done. After he retired, they obtained a computer system and s
he began to enter the many thousands of names collected over th
e years. In April 1992 Carol obtained a disk of the Richardson
, Muir and other related lines from her brother, John Thornton R
ichardson, who had been gathering data for several years from ma
ny cousins. She began to make many necessary corrections and als
o additions to the data on thedisk, and she became aware of th
e discrepancies in William Richardson's family information. Sh
e had the typed copy of the original Journal she had made back i
n 1945, besides an old photocopy of the original that her parent
s hadmade before it was placed for safekeeping in the Huntingto
n Library near LosAngeles. Later, this Journal was sent from t
here to the Genealogical Libraryin Salt Lake City and placed i
n the Archives. By using the original records, and with the ai
d of a good atlas, Carol was finally able to locate and correc
t the spellings of the places in the states of Illinois and Penn
sylvaniawhere children #3 to #6 were born. Some time previousl
y, Carol's sister, Claire (who lives near Sacramento, Ca.) sen
t her a typed copy of what must havebeen a 3rd Journal. (Clair
