1st son, he was "a Captain in the Prince's army," with which h
e marched out of York, but, going over to the side of the Parlia
ment, he was captured by the Royalists at Pontefract, 1644. H
e was afterwards one of Fairfax's officers, and being killed a
tTadcaster fight 7 Dec 1642. Fairfax, giving an account of thi
s action in aletter to the Parliament says"- "On our part we lo
st six men, and Capt. William Lister, a valiant and gallant gent
leman, who was shot with a musquet bullet in the Head." "A reli
gious and resolute gentleman, whose death is much lamented." Ma
y's account is, "That eight were killed, of whom Capt Lister wa
sone, whose death was much lamented int he country, being a bra
ve and religious man." "One of the sons of this Mr. Lister slai
n at Tadcaster (says Mr. Thoresby) travelling through the town m
any years afterwards, was inquisitive after the place of his Fat
her's Sepulture. The Sexton...told him its whereabout. He stai
d for further ssatisfaction; and upon taKing up the Skull, the
y found in it he bullet that had given the fatal Wound. This mo
rtifying and sounexpected Object made such an impression upon t
he Gentleman that he died shortly afterwards.
