Henry Thomas Walker and brother Robert W. Walker enlisted in th
e Union Army at Springfield,Mo. Henry signed the enlistment pap
ers on 5 Dec 1863. They both served in Battery K, 2nd Mo Ligh
t Artillery Regiment. Henry Thomas Walkerwas a private, and dr
ove a wheel team (lead team, swing team, wheel team--each wit
h a rider on the left horse) for the third gun of Battery K.
Followingoperation in MO during the war, the unit was transferr
ed to Omah, NE (Fort Kearney) in June 1865. Then to Powder Rive
r area of Montana Territory. About2 September 1865 Robert W. w
as killed in a large-scale battle agains Indians(See Robert W
. Walker Notes).
Henry Thomas was mustered out of the army 20November 1865 at Be
nton Barracks, St. Louis, Mo. Henry Thomas Walker also served i
n Company G, 6th Regiment Provision Enrolled Militia Infantry
. The 6th became the 16th Regiment MO Cavalry on 1 November 186
4. It is not clear when Henry Thomas served in the 6th, but th
e 6th and the 2nd operated togetherseveral times during the Civ
il War. According to family legend, Henry Thomas rejoined the a
rmy to put down another Sioux uprising in Montana Territory foll
owing the Civil War, but I believe that was the Powder River Exp
editionthat occurred after the war, but before he was mustere
d out.
Following the Civil War, Henry Thomas Walker spent the remainde
r of his life farming in theWright/Texas County area of Mo. H
e was a founding member of the Mountain Grove Masonic Lodge bein
g a member for 61 years. His first wife, Elizabeth wasa membe
r of the Eastern Star. Both were members of the Christian Churc
h.Henry Thomas Walker died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. J
ohn Canada. Henry and Elizabeth were married by Parson John Sha
rp.
