Note

When George S. Smith was 18 he went on a mission for the Churc
h of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were in Ohio, an
d told to go North which finally had them end up in Kirtland, Oh
io. From there he traversed East to New York and to the small t
own of Greenwood. While on a street corner preaching the gospel
, there was a great deal of heckling going on. One very large m
anspoke up and said that if they didn't let these men preach th
eir gospel, he would "Knock their blocks off". At this time wa
s when Joseph Lyons Lish heardthe gospel and he and his wife al
ong with 3 older children were baptized in1845. From New Yor
k they went to Michigan (Lish's) where two more children were bo
rn. From Michigan they traveled to Nauvoo where the temple an
d Headquarters of the Church were established. They received th
eir endowments and sealings in the Nauvoo Temple. They both rec
eived Patriarchal blessings- oneby John Smith, the Prophets Unc
le, and one by Hyrum Smith, the Prophet's Brother. (These bless
ings are recorded in the Salt Lake genealogy Library, but the bo
oks are so old that the pages cannot be turned without crumbling
). From Nauvoo they spent some time in Pottowatami Flats, Iowa
. From there they traveled to Utah arriving in 1850. It has be
en discovered that Joseph Lyons Lish became Brigham Young's Whee
lwright (a maker of wheels) and also that he made the wagon tha
t stands in the State Capitol in Salt Lake City Utah. Joseph an
d Harriett settled in Ogden and he was called to be a High Counc
ilman to Lorin Farr while he was Stake President. As a High Cou
ncilman he presidedover Willow Creek or Willard, Utah for quit
e some time. We do not know thatthey moved there. Joseph's na
me appears on a letter sent to Brigham Young approvihng of his t
reatment of the Indians. From Utah they went up into Albion,Cas
sia County,Idaho. Joseph Lyons Lish died there and is buried th
ere. Death occurred in September 1886.
