History of William Seely Lish, son of Joseph Lyons Lish, and Har
riet Ann Tripp Lish.
Born at Minisink, Orange county, New York, on November 9, 1824
. Written by his Granddaughter, Fairzina Lish Green Orgill, a
s related to her by his daughter, Annetta Lish Norton Jensen.
While living at Greenwood, New York,two L.D.S. Missionaries vis
ited the town. They were George A. Smith and Lyman Smith. The
y did regular missionary work and held public meetings. The fir
st persons they baptized were Joseph Lyons Lish and his wife Har
riet Ann.Eleven Days later, on July 18, 1835 William Seely wa
s baptized.
He was married to Fairzina Christina Cornwell, daughter of Lemue
ll and Susan Emmeling Darling, January 9, 1846. They were endow
ed in the Nauvoo Temple on January 11,1846. They were among th
e last to receive their endowments in the sacred house.
William was one of the men who helped take Joseph Smith from th
e Carthage Jail after the Prophet was assassinated.
When the Saints started to cross the Missouri River in Boats, h
e was with Charles Shumway, among the first to cross. They camp
ed at Sugar Creek Mt. Pisgah, Garden Grove and Florence. Hewa
s a scout for the exiles and was away whtn the 500 were called b
y the government to form the Mormon Battalion. After the men wh
o were selected had gone, Brigham Young patted him on the should
er and said, "I am glad they didn'ttaky you Billy." William re
plied. "Well, I am so little they didn't want me."
President Brigham Young sent William and twenty six other men ba
ck to St.Joseph Missouri to build a courthouse and jail. The
y money they earned wasto be used to hep the families of the Mo
rmon Battalion. When William turnedover his money, Presiden
t Young said, "Well Billy you need a pair of shoes,"and he gave
him back $5.00.
William and Fairzina remained in St. Joseph almost a year, wher
e Fairzina taught school. She felt that she couldn't go intoth
e widerness without some sheets, as she had been used to havin
g nice things in her father's home. She took some of her earnin
gs and bought a bolt ofmuslin sheeting and stored it in the bot
tom of her turnk.
William and Fairzina's first child, George Tye, was born at St
. Joseph, January 3, 1847. Whenhe was three weeks old, they we
nt to the camp of the Saints and again took uptheir journey wes
tward.

On the way, they met Jesse Westandhis wife who had come from En
gland. They were to be provided with an outfit, but for some re
ason they did not get it, so they traveled with William and Fair
zina. They came to a place where the companies aHead had left p
artsof their wagons. William told me West that he could make hi
m a wagon as thatwas his trade. They stopped and the wagon wa
s built, all but the cover. Fairzina went to her trunk and brou
ght out the precious muslin and gave it to them for a cover.
They had a second son born to them at Council Bluffs, Iowa, onM
arch 10, 1849. His name was Henry Doctor.
There were five children born to them in Ogden, Utah, where the
y settled when they reached the valley of theGreat Salt Lake
. The childrens names were Albert James, born Janury 17, 1851
; Harriet Ann born October 31, 1853; William Seely, born Octobe
r 21, 1855;and Hyrum Peola, born March 8, 1857.
They were called to help settle Huntsville, Utah, and were neigh
bors to President David O. MacKay's family. Charlotte Loretta w
as born there December 1859; Annie Maria, April 12 1861; Charle
sEdmond, May 12, 1863; alta Wealthy, October 12 1865; and Annet
ta Adalaid, September 12 1868.
While living in Huntsville, William was a seventy and a counselo
r to Bishop F. A. Hammond.
They moved from Huntsville to Malad, Idaho, and moved to severa
l places in Utah and Idaho. They finally moved to McCammonIdah
o, where in April 1893, Fairzina died of Typhoid Fever. Her fam
ily andfriends were very sorrowful when they laid her a
