Note

E.J., as she was called, was a very strong-willed independent wo
man for her Day. She filed o her own homestead claim near De Sm
et in Dakota Territory in1879. She worked as a "government gir
l" in Washington, D.C., from 1887 to 1892.
In 1893, E. J. married Thomas Thayer, father of six children an
d had oneson, Walcott" Wilder" Thayer, in 1894. Thomas died i
n 1899, and E. J. married Maxwell Gordon, whom she later divorce
d.
E. J. moved to Crowley, Louisina, and persuaded most of her fami
ly to move there and invest in rice farming which resulted i
n a loss of the family fortune. She was a knaor influence onth
e life of her niece Rose who came to live with her in Crowley fo
r ayear while attending high school. E. J. moved in with her br
other Perley in Kinger, Louisiana, later in life, where she die
d in 1930.
