Note

Mary Jane moved with her parents to a farm near Mirabile,Caldwel
l, County, MOabout 1842.
She left the Mirabile area sometime after her marriage. LDS reco
rds show them to be living in Claremore, Rogers County, OK as early
as
1854 when their first child was born, though there is a questio
n about her ever having lived in OK. The family is listed on bot
h the1870
and 1880 Censuses of Greene Township, Phelps, Lawrence County, MO.S
imon's name is listed incorrectly onthe 1870 Census as
Samuel. All other family names are correct.
LDS records [Family Group Record, Ancestral File (TM) - ver416F
] show her to have been bornin Phelps County, MO. This
isincorrect. Family lore shows her to have been born in Indian
a in Rising Sun, Ohio County. 1850 and later Census records supp
ort
IN asher birth place. Family lore also has it that Mary Jane die
d and was buried in or around Phelps, Lawrence County, MO.abou
t 4 December1899.
I was unable to locate any STOCKTON grave in the vicinity of Phe
lps in August 1996. There was one old cemetery in the middle o
f a pasture that I was not ableto find. There were no Stockton'
s foundl iving in the area at that time, norcould several "ol
d timers"
recallof any. Subsequent research has indicateda possibility th
at theSTOCKTON's lived closer to Stotts City, about 9 miles dist
ant.
A return trip is called for to research land and tax records a
t the Court House in Mount Vernon..
Sarah Steel(e), Mary Jane's mother was found listed in the Stock
ton household on the 1870 Lawrence Co. Federal Census.
Herhusband, Samuel, died about April 1866 in Caldwell County, MO
. Sarah apparentlymoved to Lawrence County to live with them. A
t
this time it has not been determined how long she was there or w
here she was buried
