In 1770 three young men came to America and gave their names a
s Samuel, James, and John R. Humphreys. They were the sons of Sy
lvester and Mary Hughes Humphreys of Queens Island, Ireland. Th
e young men located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Their stay i
n Pennsylvania must have been very short. They came to Monroe an
d Greenbrier Counties in Virginia. Samuel married and settled do
wn on Anthony's Creek inGreenbrier County, Virginia, but now We
st Virginia. We have not been able tofind anything on record th
at James Humphreys ever came to Monroe or Greenbrier Counties.
John R. Humphreys born 1748, died about 1806, is the son of S
ylvester and Mary (Hughes) Humphreys. At the age of 22 he saile
d for America.In 1774 he married Jane Robinson. They settled do
wn on the waters of Second Creek in Monroe County, Virginia, no
w West Virginia. John R. served on a grandjury in Greenbrier Co
unty, Virginia, in 1780.
In 1805 John R. Humphreys and sons were Granted a land warran
t of 1,035 acres on the waters of Second Creek in Greenbrier Cou
nty, Virginia. The exact location of this League of landis no
t known. It is thought to be the same land that the Hon. C. F. D
ickinson now owns. John R. Humphreys died about 1806.

John R. Humphreys,Jr. born Aug 1775, died about 1815, married U
nknown Dolan.
Alexander Humphreys, born 1778, died unmarried in Ireland abou
t 1800.
William Humphreys, born1781, married Hannah Dolan.

Isaac M. Humphrey
Isaac M. Humphrey, a capitalist of Rapid City and the presid
ent of the Rapid City Implement Company, has been closely associ
ated with the development of Western South Dakota along agricult
ural, commercial andfinancial lines. He seems to readily recogn
ize the possibilities of
any business situation, takes cognizance of conditions and so mo
lds them as to produce the most desirable results. Never fearin
g to venture where favoring opportunity has led the way, his abi
lity and even paced energy have carried him intoimportant busin
ess relations. He was born in Buffalo, New York, October 25,185
1, a son of Arthur K. and Hulda (Olcott) Humphrey, the former o
f Englishand the latter of Scotch descent. Arthur K. Humphrey w
as born near Buffalo,New York, his parents having taken up thei
r abode there with the colony of settlers who came from New Engl
and, The paternal grandfather Arthur Humphrey, Sr., was of Engli
sh birth and when a young man came to the United States, remaini
ng for a brief period in New England and thence removing to Ne
w York. Both the father and mother of Isaac M. Humphrey have lon
g since passed away. Intheir family were eight children, of who
m he is the third in order of birth.
In the schools of Buffalo he pursued his education to the ag
e of ten yearsand then accompanied his parents on their remova
l to Maquoketa, Jackson county, Iowa, where he settled on a farm
, after which his educational opportunities were limited to thre
e months, attendance at the district school during thewinter se
