Tempest family of Bolton, lancashire.
The Tempest family of yorkshire and Lancashire could trace its h
istory back to the twelfth-century founder of the priory of Bolt
on. Sir Piers Tempest(born 1390s), who was knighted at Agincou
rt, was the founder of two major landowning branches of the fami
ly. Sir Richard Tempest(d. 1489) fought at Towton and was burie
d at Giggleswick Church with the Head of his horse beside him
. His grandson fought at Flodden and is reputed to have built B
racewell House. A junior member of the family built Tong Hall w
hich stayed in the familyfrom at least the late sixteenth centu
ry. sir John Tempest (d 1693) was born there as was his younge
r brother, Pierce Tempest (1653-1712_, the printseller and publi
sher of the Strand. The papers relate to a junior branch of th
e family established at Broughton. Stephen Tempest bilt the mna
or house atBroughton in 1597 and was knighted by james I. Anot
her Stephen Tempest (1654-1742_ was lord of the manor for 70 yea
rs and was responsible for improving the house and gardens. Hi
s son, Stephen Tempest (d 1744), was author of the Religio Laici
.
