Maj. John, of Newport, Ri., son of George Bliss, of Belstone, En
gland and Newport) born about 1645is frequently referred to i
n the records of the colony of RI and appears tohave been an ac
tive citizen and man of much influence in the colony. March 28t
h, 1667, "Ensign" John Bliss, with three others, was appointe
d a committee "to go from house to house and take a precise an
d exact account of all thearms, ammunition, and weapons of wa
r each person is furnished with, or hath in his house to spare t
o others, and in wht condition with regard to service the same i
s in, and it to return to the Governor." He was admitted a free
man in Newport, Oct. 28 1668, was a Deputy in the General Assemb
ly in 1679 and1683, was chosen by the freemen as a member of th
e Town Council Jun 4, 1689,and again June 11, 1690. In 1693 "C
aptain" John Bliss (and three others) wasauthorized to view wha
t ammunition is needed for the guns, and to provide such that i
s wanting for them and other uses, out of ye monies due upon y
e account of ye whole money being delivered or ordered them by y
e Town Treasurer,as they may have ocation, by order of ye Gover
nor or any two magistrates."Jan. 1 1695, he was again chosen D
eputy to the General Assembly, and appointed "Major" of the isla
nd Jan 29, 1695, and acre of land was Granted to Maj. John Bliss
, on which to erect a mill. Nov 29 1715, a deed of 102 acres o
f land was given "to my son Josiah" signed by John and Damiri
s Bliss. He was married Jan 24 1666 to Damaris, daughter of Go
v. Benedict Arnold, of the Rhode Island Colony - who gave a "par
cel of land in the precincts of Newport to herin his will, date
d in 1677. The name of Damaris Bliss is found in the Seventh Da
y Baptist Church records for the year of 1692.
