In Bingham Fort-Near and adjoining the Old Bingham Fort on wha

s and was first inhabitedby Erastus Bingham; then, in 1888 by S
amuel Wilson and his wife, Eliza Racham, who lived in it for sev
enteen years. Florence Wilson Hunter, a relative ofthe Bingha
m family, lived in it for sometime and then it was purchased b

Bingham's Fort. In the spring of 1851 a farm was laidout in wha
t is known as the Lynn District, and Bingham's Fort was establis
hed. Here a log house was erected and the entire family of Erast
us Bingham moved to this location. The log house was substantial
ly built and is still standing and being occupied. Bingham's For
t was located North of Second Street andWest of Wall Avenue i
n Ogden. The fort enclosed an area 120 by 60 rods and its wall
s were built of rocks and mud, principally mud. Each family wa
s assigned to build a portion of the wall which was about four r
ods from the houses. Thomas Richardson, a pioneer boy who live
d in Bingham's Fort, tells how thewalls were constructed: "We d
id not have lumber to put up to hold the mud, so we placed uprig
ht poles tapering from about eight feet at the bottom and thre
e feet at the top. We set stakes between the poles and wove will
ows in like a willow fence, then filled the space with mud. We m
ade a ditch nearby torun water down to make the mud. While wet
, we threw it in with shovels, spades or anything we had. The wa
ll was about twelve feet high. The fort had an entrance on the w
est side large enough to drive a team through, with a gate const
ructed of heavy timber which stood as high as the wall. Had it b
een completed there would have been a similar gate on the east.
"
Bingham's Fort andthe Lynn Canal which served the fort with wat
er and also for irrigation of the farm lands nearby, was surveye
d by Isaac Newton Goodale, a son-in-law of Erastus Bingham, bu
t due to Goodale's assignment to similar duties in southernUtah
, the actual supervision of both the Lynn Canal and the Bingha
m Fort walls fell to Erastus Bingham. The water carried by the L
ynn Canal was divertedfrom the Ogden River near Farr's Mill. He
re at the fort as in other undertakings directed by the Church a
uthorities, there was a working plan. The farmswere adjacent t
o the fort; and as the men worked they were continually on thea
lert for Indians. The cattle were herded on the meadows but wer
e all brought into the fort for protection at night.
On March 3, 1852, Weber County wasorganized, with Ogden as th
e county seat. In October of the same year, the first municipa
l election was held in Ogden, resulting in the election of Lori
n Farr as mayor, and Charles R. Danna, Erastus Bingham and ten o
ther individuals as city councilmen. In 1853, settlers began t
o gather at Bingham's Fortlocated North of Ogden. At the clos
