After John Henry Loy's father died in NC without having made a w
ill, his mother Margaret was awarded custody of their three mino
r children: John, Daniel, and Elizabeth, in the February 1798 co
urt. Daniel died as a teen while Johnand he were en route "fro
m NC to AL" searching land for their mother and sisters. In 180
6 John Henry's mother Margaret bought land on Lost Cree in (then
) Claiborne County, TN from Daniel Sharp, the brother of her son-in
-law GeorgeSharp. Witnesses to this sale were Henry Sharp, Ja
mes McNutt (whose wife Mary Sharp McNutt was George Sharp's sist
er), Joh Loy (Margaret's son) and a Jacob Sharp. Shen she sol
d the same land in October 1808 (then in Campbell Co)to Henry S
harp, who had been witness to her purchase, the witnesses then w
ere Michael Huffacre and Jacob Sharp. James McNutt and John Lo
y at that timewere in Madison County, Mississippi Territory (now A
l) where they were in nexthousehold to each ther in the Januar
y 1809 census. They had also purchasedtheir land together in t
he same Day, 30 January 1809, in consecutive order, implying the
y had gone to the land office together to make the purchase." fr
