Note

The following information about Oliver Roby Bennett and his fami
ly comes froma sketch of Ephraim Bennet, one of his sons, appea
ring in History of Shiawasee and Clinton Counties (1880) by Fran
klin Ellis.
Oliver R. Bennett was bornin New Hampshire, from whence he wit
h his father moved into the State of NewYork about 1808, and se
ttled near Canandaigua. The breaking out of the Warof 1812 fir
ed the patriotism of young Bennett, and he enlisted and was wit
hthe American Army at Buffalo when that city burned. His regim
ent was soon after discharged when he again enlisted and serve
d the remainder of the war under Gen. Harrison. After the war h
e went to Shelby, Orleans County, N.y. wherehe and his brother Joh
n bought a piece of new land of General Wadsworth. Itwas thirt
y miles from any inhabitants, in th emidst of a dense wilderness
.Nothing daunted, they built a shanty on their lot and for a t
ime kept bachelors' hall while they cleared and improved the lan
d. In 1826 they sold out and again wended their way Westward, s
ettling in Brunswick, Medina County, Ohio which was then very new
. Here Oliver resided until his death in August 1863.
Oliver served throughout the war of 1812. He enlisted as a priv
ate and eventually reached the rank of Orderly Sergeant.
The name of Oliver's wife appearsin various documents as Mary e
. Ford, Elizabeth Bennett, Betsey Ford, and Betsey Ford Humes
. I assume her maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Ford, and that sh
e was a young widow when she married Oliver Roby Bennett. Possi
bly she was the Mary Ford who had married David Humes in Windsor
, Berkshire County, Mas onMarch 27, 1810. Mary Elizabeth Ford wa
s born in Mass on 27 mar 1794. She and Oliver had at least eigh
t children.
