Joseph Tillotson, son of John Tillotson and Mary Morrice, was bo
rn 29 mar 1689, Saybrook,Ct. He married Hannah Graham on Januar
y 13,1725/26 in Hartford, Ct. (Joseph may have been previousl
y married, but tTraditionally Hannah Graham has been identifie
d as the daughter of George Johnson and Hannah Dorman, born on A
pril 5, 1699. This seems very unlikely as thewills of the John
son family do not mention any Tillotson connection, and themarr
iage of this Hannah Johnson to Samuel Wooster is well establishe
d. A hundred years ago, Lucius Barber suggested Joseph's wife w
as Hannah Messenger, probably the daughter of Nthan Messenger an
d Rebecca Kelsey. Hannah was baptized May 8, 1698 and so was pr
obably born shortly before that.
Hannah was awidow, having previously been married to John Graha
m who died on July 28, 1720. (The name "Graham" also appears a
s "Grimes" and "Grihms", probably reflecting the way the name wa
s pronounced.) Hannah and John had one daughter, Mary, whom Jos
eph reared:
Joseph was one of the richest men in Hartford. He bought the Be
njamin Graham homestead and a three-quarters interest in a gris
t mill on Little River. John, Joseph's father, gifted him wit
h a deed for rights to ancestral lands in Sowerby Bridge, in Yor
kshire, England, as well asother property in Newberry, Massachu
setts. Unfortunately Joseph lost his property by becoming suret
y for friends and relatives. Jsoeph endorsed credit for at leas
t two men who ran off with the borrowed money. Joseph made goo
dthe losses, leaving him financially strapped. Tradition sugge
sts Joseph's health deteriorated badly after this time.
Joseph died in 1755 in Farmington, Connecticut, Hannah died on May 26, 1
787 in Chester, Massachusetts, at "almost" ninetyyears of age.
