Note

Edmund Davy Mortlock (1787-1873) was sent to Bury St. Edmunds Gr
ammar Schooland then to Christ's College, Cambridge, from wher
e he was ordained and speedily set up as a Curate at Pampisford
. His eventual serious publications on the Athanasian Creed an
d on other aspects of the Christian religion do show that his po
sition in the Church was no mere stipend-getting formality. H
e apparently never publicly married, but was reputed scandalousl
y and secretly wed to the dowager Marchioness of Bute, to whos
e son he had been tutor - marriage would have cost him his Fello
wship of Christ's; no smoke wihout fore somemight sayp; but fo
r some any brush would do to tar a Mortlock. Certainly heresis
ed on the Continent with the family for many years after the dea
th ofthe Marquess with occurred, at Geneva, in October 1714 - w
ithin a year of Edmund taKing up his post, into which he had bee
n pressed or Head-hunted by hisbrother-in-law, Bishop Kay. On
e of Edmund's lifelong friens was the 2nd Earlof Harrowby who h
ad married Bute's youngest daughter. Edmund was brainy likehi
s sibling Thomas although on 14th Wrangler to his brother's 8th.
