Note

Thomas Hampton was Sergeant in 2nd Virginia Regiment. Enlisted M
arch 25, 1777for a term of three years uder Robert Norfolk, Rec
ruiting Officer. Having duly served his time for which he was e
nlisted, he was discharged from the service on April 10, 1780
. James Quarles, Major, signed his discharge papers.The Virgi
nia Court of Claims, after the Revolution, paid him ten shilling
sper Day for 19 Days for the use of his team wagon and negro dr
iver.

In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Hampton of Pittsylvania Count
y, and State of Virginia,being through the Tender Mercy of Go
d well in health, and of Sound and Perfect understanding and Mem
ory, do constitute this my Last will and Testement, and desire i
t may be received by all as such. First I most Humbly Bequeat
h my Soul to God my Maker and my Body to the earth, from whenc
e I was taken, infull assurance of its Resurection from thenc
e at the Last Day, as for my Buriel I desire it may be decen, a
t the discretion of my Dear Wife and my Executors here after nam
ed as to my Worldly estate, I will and Positively Order thatal
l my Debts be paid, First I give to my Dear and Loving Wife, fo
r the term of her life one third of the Tract of Land whereo
n I now live, with the houses and Orchards and Furtutures etc. a
nd every other appurtenances there untobelonging with all the C
attle, Hourses, hoggs, Sheep and all the Negroes, onCondition s
he doth not contract marriage nor take to any bad Course of Life
, and after her decease to be distributed in the following manne
r. Item, Igive unto my Son Henry Hampton a certain tract of La
nd Lying and being in North Carolina in Surry County on Blues, w
hereon he now lives Containing, Six hundred and forty six Acres
, to him and his heirs forever.--Item I give to my Son James Ham
pton, a Negro Boy named Bob, also half of the tract of Land, her
eon I now Live, to be divided Between him and my Son, John Hampt
on, Containing by Patron one hundred and ninty five acres. Als
o to my Son James I give my riding horse, and one young Roan mar
e and one Musket Gun and one fifth partof all kind of stocks, t
o them and their heirs forever. Item I give unto mySon Presto
n Hampton two hundred acres of Land, whereon he now lives to hi
mand any heir or heirs he shall choose or appoint, Except his w
ife ElizabethHampton, Also one Rifle Gun and one fifth part o

d living child at two years old to go to Nancy's eldest Son Thom
