In a table hanging att the quier dore.
Here under resteth the body of Brian Crowther, clothier of Halif
ax, who deceased in the faith of Christ Jesus, full of yeares an
d goodworkes, the xi of January, anno Domini 1607, of the age o
f lxx (70) cheife benefactor to the free schoole and pore.
(by his will he left an annuity of 10 pounds to the poor of Hali
fax, charged upon his messuages and lands at Armyn (Watson's His
tory of Halifaxz, p 580) and an annuity of 20 pounds to the Fre
e Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth at Halifax, also charged upo
n his estateat Army (Ibid;, p 713) besides other charitable beq
uests. His widow Jane andher sister Ellen Hopkinson gave an al
mshouse to the town during their life-time (Ibid., p 583), and h
is widow left a rent charge of 8 pouns per annum forthe teachin
g of poor children in the almshouse (Ibid., p 586).
