John was an English surgeon. His forfathers resided at Bowridg
e for nearly acentury. In 1635, with his wife and 6 children
, John sailed on the "James"and arrived in Boston 3 June 1635
. Joanne died and he married second Alice Daniels, a widw and i
n 1642-43 moved to warwick, R.I. Alice died; then he wentto Eng
land, married Phillipa in 1644, and came back to Warwick in 1646

Bio: JohnGreene was born in 1597, Probably at Bowridge Hall, Gi
llingham, Dorsetshire,England, where his father Richard and Gran
dfather Richard son of Robert) resided. He was married in 161
9 at St. Thomas Church in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England to Joa
n Tattersall, and there he did practice his profession as a surg
eon. He sailed in the ship "James" on April 6, 1635 from Southa
mpton Eng and arrived in Boston on June 3 1635. He lived in Sal
em, Mass for two years and was a friend of Roger Williams. On A
ugust the 1st 1637 he was bound in 100marks to appear at the ne
xt Quarter Court for having spoken contemtously ofthe magistrat
es. At this he departed for Providence to join Roger Williams
. On Sept 29, 1637 he was fine 20 pounds and to be committed ti
ll paid, andenjoined not to come into the jurisdiction of thi
s court upon pain of fine and imprisonment at the pleasure of th
e court for speaking so contemtously of magistrates. On March 1
2, 1638 he sent a letter to the General Court of Masscharging t
hem "with usurping the power of C'hrist over the churhs and men'
sconsciences; etc., and for the he was ordered not to come int
o Masss under pain of imprisonment and further censure. He wa
s one of the twelve to whom Roger ?Williams deeded the land he b
outh on Oct 8 1638 from Canonicus and Miantonomoh. In the sam
e year he was one of the twelve original members of the First Ba
ptist Church. For 144 fathoms of Wampum he and ten others on Ja
n 121643 then bought from Miamtonomoh the tract of land which b
ecame the town ofWarwick Sept 12 1643 the men of Warwick were s
ummoned to Boston on the complain of Pomham and Socconocco, bu
t they refused to go, as they claimed they were beyond the limit
s of Mass authority. Soldiers were sent and besieged the settle
rs in a fortified house. He escaped but all the rest were carri
ed toboston and imprisoned until March, when they and he were b
anished. With twoothers he went to England to obtain redress f
or their wrongs. He was obligedto take a ship from New York, h
e returned in 1646 successful. He was commissioner in 1654, 165
5-6-7. His wife Joan died about the time of his leaving from En
gland. He married Alice Daniels, a widow who died in 1643. H
e married again this time to Phillis ? who survived hima nd die
d Mar 10 1688. He died in 1658, leaving a will which was prove
n Jan 7 1659. He named his wife, Phillis executrix (except as t
o matters with William Arnold, which his son John was to atten
d to. In the will he gives to his wife, sons John, Peter, Jame
s and Thomas and daut Mary Sweet and grand child Ann Hade (his d
aut Joan'schild)
