Nathaniel was born about 1593 in Colchester Essex England. He w
as apprenticed to Samuel Croyle, grocer of Colchester, for a per
iod of 8 years on Sept 21,1608. "Nathaniel Foote age 16 years
, son of Robert Foot of Shalford in Com.Essex yeoman doth put h
imself apprentice to Samuel Croylye of Colchester, aforesaid gor
cer, and Free Burgess from the Feast of St. Michael, the Archang

Nathaniel was one of the earliest settlers in 1636 in Wethersfie
ld, Hartford, Connecticut, USA He was one of the first ten settlers
, known as "adventures," as was his wife Elizabeth,s brother Joh
n Deming. He was Granted a home-lot of 10 acres in the origina
l layout of the town in 1640 in wethersfield, Hartford, Connecti
cut. Over the years, he became the owner of more than 400 acre
s of land. Nathaniel represented Wethersfield in the Connecticu
t Assembly between 1641 and 1643. He served as representative t
o the General Court in 1641, 1643, and 1644. He was still a pro
prietorat Watertown, although he had been living at Wethersfiel
d for 6 years, in 1642. He died before 20 Dec 1644 in Wethersfi
eld and his estate was inventoriedon 20 Dec 1644 in Wethersfiel
d.
Foote Family
Nathaniel Foote "The Settler"- came to New England with his wif
e Elizabeth. He was one of the first tensettlers (known as "ad
ventures") in Wethersfield, Connecticut, USA Elizabeth wasthe sist
er of Mr. John Deming, also one of the first settlers. In th
e original layout of the town, 1640 Nataniel received a home-lo
t of ten acres, and gradually over the years he became owner o
f over 400 acres. He represented the town in the General Cour
t - this is evidence that he was held in respect and confidenc
e by his fellow townsmen.
In may 1637, when the little army under Capt. John Mason was bei
ng provisioned for the memorable Pequot campaign, it was "ordere
d y that there shalbe 1 hogg p'vided att Whythersfield for the d
esign in hand, wch is conceived to be Nathaniell Footes"--a comp
liment,certainly from the Col. authorities to Mr. Foote's abili
ty in raising good pork!
This family, as a whole, had a large share in the tragedies of t
hat early Day for Philip Smith, husband to Rebecca Foote, was an
nounced to have been"murdered with an hideous witchcraft", amon
g the members of the early generations, Nathaniel Foote had, (a
) daughter-in-law and two of her children takencaptive by the I
ndians and another child killed; (b), a daughter and three ofhe
r children killed, while (c) her husband and two other childre
n were made captives; and (d) two more of her children wounded
; and Frances Foote losttwo husbands by the Indians as well a
s one son-
