REFN: 1FCP-F6 Nauvoo Register. 30 Dec 1845, Moses Mecham, (seventy) born 19 feb 1804, Canaan, Grafton, New Hampshire Utah Cemetery Inventory Moses and Elvira moved to Mercer, Pennsylvania, along with other family members, shortly after their marriage. They stayed there until 1836, when they moved to Kendrick, Iowa. While in Iowa, Moses ran a successful mercantile business and prospered. He soon heard that his father and other members of his family had joined a new Church. He was worried about the severe persecution members of that Church were enduring. Moses and his wife investigated the Church and became convinced it was the right Church. They were baptised in Columbus, Illinois 1839. Moses and his brothers, Joshua and Lewis, were called on missions to the Indians and were well received. Finally, in 1853, with members of their extended family as well as their own, they started West in an independent company. Moses and a sonwere quite ill when they started out but soon regained their health. After a short stay in the Valley, they went on to Lehi, then went back to Provo where they settled down. Moses taught school for a number of years in Provo. Later they moved to the mouth of Provo Canyon where he worked as a toll keeper for thelocal government. He and his family were very spiritual people, filling any callings that came to them. |
