Name Prefix:<NPFX> Lieutenant
Joah Aked became a Lieutenant in the 22nd Regiment of Foot, an
d was sent to New York with his regiment in 1780 during the Amer
ican War. He evidently found campainging little to his likin
g after hiscomfortable quarters at Chatham, for he writes hom
e in February 1781 saying:-I see that the General (Fawcett) i
s again in Germany. I should be very glad if they would send hi
m here, as then I might perhaps get into some public employ, a
s there is a number here who get from five to ten shillings a da
y for doing little or nothing. I should be glad if you could pr
ocure for me a letter of recommendation from him to the Commande
r-in-chief, as that might beof singluar service and a means o
f promoting me in the Army,"
