Note

The records of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, Pa
., show the marriage on 4 jul 1736 of Darby Carty and Hannah Ric
hardson. Darby McCarty appears in the land records of Frederic
k Co. Va in 1754 and on a Poll List there of 24 Jul 1758. (Se
e Virginia Magazine of History and Biography v6 p 165).In 177
4 Darby McCarty of the Manor of Leads in Dunmore County with son
s Enoch and Benjamin is mentioned (Shenandoah Co. Va Deed Book A
, p 516). Fartherinto the article, he says that " the Familie
s of Darby, James Sr., and William McCarty are complete. A surv
eyor, William Green remarked in his field note s in 174 that h
e was surprised to find a Darby McCarty in what was then thewil
ds of the Shenandoah Valley. The only other person in t he gene
ral area was a hunter named Wilson. Green said Darby McCarty la
te of Bucks co. Pa.He also said Darby showed him a 'certificat
e of good behavior'. Such certificates were issued by big lan
d owners in Northern Ireland to loyal tenants who were migratin
g to the new world. There was another McCarty family in Buck'
s County about the same time as Darby. This one was a Silas McC
arty, and in his children appear many of the same Christian nam
es that appear in Darby's.
