Dear Sir:-
In reply to your inquiry concerning the McCarty family we have r
akes up all the information that uncle Frank can remember as w
e have nothing in shape of a record to go by.
My Greatgrand Father, James McCarty and two brothers, Benjami
n and Darby settled at Mitchel Springs about 1777. James McCart
y married in Virginia to a woman named Fugate. He later marrie
d into the Fain family and settled near Rogerville,Tenn.
Benjamin was the first District Judge in that part of the Countr
y, hewas appointed by the governor of North Carolina, sanctione
d by the King of England (George). The first murder trial was h
eld under a big elm tree in hisyard near Mitchell Springs abou
t 1800. He and family moved to Indiana and settled near the pre
sent capitol of the State (date .)
Darby McCarty settled in Alabama on the south slope of Sand Moun
tain, I think in Blout County (date )
James McCarty was a Civil Engineer and surveyor, and was alsoin
terested in mining. His wife (first) was killed and scalped b
y Indiansin the spring of 1777, near Mitchell Springs while sh
e was engaged in makingmaple sugar or syrup leving my grandfath
er (John then about 3 months old) laying nearby in a cradle impr
ovised from a sugar trough unharmed. He (my grandfather John) w
as taken by pack horse back to Virginia to his mother's people
, (The Fugate) near the Roanoke and there grew to manHood. He r
eturned to the same locality (Mitchell Springs) with his young w
ife, her maiden name wasMayse, early in 1800 and settled near t
he present site of Turley's Mill on the south side of the river
. To this union was born 8 children, Rachiel, Isaac, James, Lov
e, Stirling, Franklin and two girls. I do not remember their na
mes. Rachiel married Dr. Satterfield and settled in the Northwe
st part of Arkansas.
Isaac married Mariah Williams and (spent) all his life in Graing
erCounty, Tn
James married into the Mayse family and settled in Eastern Misso
urisouthWest of St. Louis

nto Valley during the Gold Rush Days. He had one son that we kn
ow of named Daniel, who was single the last we heard.
Stirling never married tht we know of. He settled in Springfiel
d Missouri.
