Note

Name Prefix:<NPFX> Sir
Sir John was named for Thomas Cheetham (d. 1785) the wealthy bu
t childless husband of John I's daughter Ann, whom he married a
s awidower in1847 when Ann was 41.
The heir, John Cheetham (1777-1845), raisedand commanded the Ca
mbridge Volunteers in the later Napoleonic wars. From Eton - ho
w high and the "counter-jumper" jumped! - he continued to Queen
s College - where he graduated in Mathematics as 10th Senior Opt
ime, somewhat below his younger brother Thomas who graduated i
n the same year (1800). He thenprogressed to the Middle Temple
. Through having been Mayor (nine times) in alternation with hi
s father his portrait hangs in Cambridge guildhall, although th
e latter part of his life he had little connection with the Coun
ty. From 1820, having the previous year been appointed a Commis
sioner of Excise, hespent most of his time in London at his hou
se in Dorset Square.
