Note

From Denise Mullin, Jan 26, 2000 (copy)
I also have an article written on Lewis Hillier who married my g
reat grandmother Bessie Hillier (wife of Edmund Hillier) and mov
ed from Lamaline to Saskatchewan. It came from the book "Mervi
n Memories" written by the Mervin HOmecoming Committee in 1992.
Lewis (Louie)Hillier
Lews was born and raised in Newfoundland in the 1880's. As a yo
ungman he fished on the Grand Banks in that area and also makin
g several tripsto the French owned islands of St Pierre and miq
uelon for various reasons ofwhich rum smuggling was one; thes
e island being a short distance from Newfoundland.
On one of these trips on board ship they encountered a particula
rly severe storm and Lewis made the decision if he would safel
y come through thisone, he would leave the sea forever. Whic
h he did, going West to file on a homestead in 1909, on top of H
orse Hill the N.E. 25-49-21, where he farmed fora number of yea
rs before selling hishomestead to George Regnier. After whichh
e purchased at a tax sale the S.W. 18-50-19 where he farmed unti
l he retired.
In 1926 he returned to Newfoundland for an extended visit, renti
ng hisland to Carl and Nels Ottas for a year.
In 1927 he returned having married a widow (also named Hillier a
s in the community where he was raised Hillier wasa common name
) with two young children George about 13 or 14 and Marion a yea
r of so younger.
The children went to school at Daysville School. Upon fnishin
g school, George worked around the district and for a short tim
e in Alberta, eventually going to Flin Flon where he worked befo
re joining the army.
He was sent overseas where he was severely wounded by American P
lanes bombingCanadian positions by mistake. He was invalided a
nd while in the veteran'shospital in Manitoba met his future wi
fe Hanna, a nurse.
After being discharged from the hospital, they moved to Flin Flo
n where he got his job back andhave resided ever since. Marion
, I believe is also residing in Flin Flon andI also believe i
s a nurse.
Lewis Hillier in the late 1940's rented his landto Hayward Pott
er. Eventually they moved to Edam where they lived for a numbe
r of years until Mrs. Hillier passed away and a few year later L
ewis alsopassed away, both being buried in the Edam cemetery
. This land is now ownedby Roy Erickson and is all broken up
