49 JOHN Grant North (4)
He d. 23 Jan 1953 and bur. at Elysian Park Cemetery, Salt Lake C
ity, Utah
His early years were spent at Mill Creek with his family, attend
ing school and Church and helping with the home chores. These w
ere happy times for him and many times he would relate these mem
ories to his own children.
During Worl War I, he worked in the ship yards at Portland, Oreg
on, (191701918). Because of a slight physical disability he cou
ld not join the armed services and felt that the ship yards wa
s the next bestway to assist his country during war time.
During 1918 and 1919 he served asa Citizens Seaman (Merchant Ma
rine) between West Coast ports and Hawaii. Hisship was the "Nu
polela."
After the war her returned to Salt Lake County andwas married
. He was a devoted husband and father. His philosophy was mild
ed by the close contact he had with his father and he passed thi
s on to hischildren. He made friends easily and his friends we
re lasting ones. His friends and associates developed a bond o
f trust with him.
He always "kept hisword." He never made promises, regardless o
f how trivial, unless he intendedto keep them. On several occa
sions one of his children would say, "Daddy, promise us such an
d such." He would say "I can't make a promise for that, buti
f things work out right we'll try to do it." This lesson ws on
e he always impressed upon his children and he set a perfect exa
mple for them.
His energies and skills were many. He could build or repair pra
ctically anything. His spare time (what little was left after w
orKing 12-16 hours a Day when work was available) was spent fo
r the most part in maKing our home a better place to live.
He was an honest man! During the great depression Days, Daddy d
ays, Daddy lost his job and was without steady employment fo
r a number of years. He took any job that came along and spen
t hours and Days searching for work of any kind. He worried con
stantly about the destiny of his family. Thefamily's financia
l condition was disastrous and bills continued to accumulate. W
hen he finally was seccessful in securing employment again he pa
id small amounts regularly on each account until the entire deb
t was paid. The lesson was also impressed upon his children.
He was active in his Church. He served as President of the Elde
rs Quorum, Vanguard Leaders, and Ward Teacher at South Cottonwoo
d Ward for many years.
His life time dream--to have a businessof his own--came true i
n 1952 when he built a repair and manufacturing shopat Sandy, U
tah. He worked hard and business was thriving. Mother and Dadd
y were able to enjoy life and spent a few Days fishing or visiti
ng one of their children without worrying about bills. His drea
m lasted less than a year, however. He died 23 Jan 1953 at hi
s home in Sandy, Utah at the age of 55.
