Note

LeGrand Richardson was born April 4, 1956, in Richfield, Utah
. He was the seventh of ten children. He attended Kingergarte
n in Logan, Utah, and the remaining years in Jackson, Wyoming
After graduating from Jackson Wilson High School in 1974 he atte
nded Ricks College one year and B.Y.U. one year.
In 1977,he served on a two-year mission for his Church to Taiwa
n.
Upon his return, he worked at Western Thriftway Foods in Jackson
,Wyoming in various positions.
LeGrand was born two Days before his mother's birthDay, and beca
me known as"Mama's BirthDay Boy."
How he got his name is an interesting story. LeGrand was born a
t the time of General Conference. His father had not yet give
n his final approval to any name for the new baby when he came t
o the hospital for a visit. LeGrand's mother had just been list
ening to General Conference and heard LeGrand Richards speak. S
he asked LeGrand's father what he thought of the name, LeGrand
? He ssaid, "yes" that was a fine name.
LeGrand always knew how to make people laugh. No matter what th
e situation he could pull a face that would make you smile. H
e seemed to sense what people were feeling and would pull a fac
e out of his expression bag that would just fit the occasion
. MaKing people feel good was always one of his major characte
ristics. He had a smile for everyone who came into the store n
o matter how he was feeling that Day.
LeGrand had a rare athletic talent. You could throw an olive o
r a cherry tomato at him from a goodly distance and he could cat
ch it in hismouth - every time with his hands behind his back
. The editors at The Guiness Book of World Records were never c
ontacted, but he had aspirations of obtaining that achievement.
LeGrand's sense of humor was paramount in the way he treated peo
ple.
One time he led the music at Mutual with a little plastic hamme
r he had found. He got everyone laughing and singing.
As a young child, on a cold, rainy, mosquito-infested fishing tr
ip with his family he had been standing in the tent for a whil
e when suddenly he burst out of the flaps and yelled, "Is Everyb
ody Happy?" Instantly he brought sunshine to an otherwise drear
y trip.
Also as a child growing up he and a sister used to practice cryi
ng so they could go along with their Mom and Dad wherever they w
ent. (Andit worked.)
While developing his talent on the accordion, LeGrand and a sist
er were asked to play in Church. the decided to always play th
e same song whenever they were asked to perform in an effort t
o avoid many future performances. They must have played "Swee
t Hour of Prayer" forty-'leven times.
LeGrand had an extra-special love for children. He had all of h
is nieces and nephews convinced that he was their favorite Uncle
. Just prior to leaving for his mission he held one of his thre
e-month old nieces and said to her, "I wantyou to know my nam
e by the time I get back, 'cause I'm going to be your favorite U
ncle." Just one week before his death he was talKing to his sis
ter-in-law's unborn child and said, "Listen up in there. This i
s your favorite Uncle."
His family recalls him as the finest brother anyone could ever h
ave andhe possessed the greatest qualilties of the Boy Scout La
w. LeGrand was always: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, c
ourteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and re
verent.
Never an ill word about him could befound. Many acknowledged h
is sweet and loving spirit--not the sweetness known to the world
, but of a spiritual sense. He was a charitable and generous a
s could possibly be found in man. All who had known him knew h
e had a depth not totally fathomed. One brother recalls a tim
e he paid his own way to fly to Oklahoma to help move and driv
e one of their cars clear to California.
LeGrand was a gregarious person. Nothing ever made him higher t
han to be with his brothers and sisters all at one time.
