Pioneer Mills and Millers
Mills Built in Mill Creek Canyon (Salt Lake County)
Mill No. 2-The gristmill built by John Neff, Sr., in 1848. It w
as located just West of the Pond at Oakwood. It was run by a lar
ge over-shot wheel and a log for a shaft; improving the power, a
s time went on, until finally it was run by a large turbinewhee
l. This was the first flour mill in Utah which separated the flo
ur fromthe bran and shorts.
Mill No. 5-Built by John Neff, Sr. This mill had a sashsaw, an
d had an under-shot wheel, located three-fourths of a mile wes
t ofthe mouth of the canyon, or what is known as the Moses Esta
te.
Mill No. 6-Built by John Neff, Sr. This was a shingle mill, loca
ted near the home of J. O. Smith.
Various writers inform us substantially that in the spring of 18
48"John Neff located a millsite on Mill Creek near a little gro
ve about two miles below the mouth of Mill Creek canyon. In Jul
y and August following, the mill race was dug by Mr. Binley, an
d about harvest time the mill commenced operations, even befor
e the building was roofed in. With the exception of a small chop
ping mill put up by Charles Crismon at the mouth of City Creek c
anyon, this was the first mill in the Salt Lake Valley, and it m
ade the first flour produced in Utah. Crismon's mill had no bolt
ing cloth, and the shorts and bran were not separated, it bein
g only a chopper."
The next spring he selected a farm on Mill Creek, near the sit
e where John Neff built the first Utah flour mill. Here, for th
e first time, he commenced to till the soil. That fallhe went a
s far east as the Sweet-water to meet President Brigham Young. A
fter returning, he was selected as Salt Lake City's first pound-
keeper, with Horace S. Eldredge as his assistant.
A number of members of the Church who intended to join the gener
al exodus Westward, and who then were residing on theAtlantic c
oast, sent merchandise on this ship in the care of Brannan, thin
king to make the trip overland and meet the other saints on th
e shores of thePacific. Among those shipping goods were my fath
er, John Neff, John Van Cottand several others. Of course, no k
nowledge of gold being in the country wasthen to be had. The ma
tter of the exodus was purely a religious one.
