Mary Bennion Calder
Vernal - Funeral Services were held at the Vernal Second Ward Ch
apel ThursDay for Mrs. Mary Bennion Calder, one of the last surv
ivors of thepioneers of 1847, who died MonDay. She was born Ma
y 4, 1844 at Nauvoo, Illionis. Her parents were John and Esthe
r Wainwright Bennion. She came to Utahwith her parents in 1847
, and settled the grazing section to the West of theJordan Rive
r in Salt Lake Valley. On Apr 6, 1881 at Taylorsville, she wa
smarried to George Calder and they moved to what was for year
s knowns as the Calder farm, where they built a pioneer pleasur
e resort known as Calder Park,now as Nibley Park. They came t
o Vernal in 1903.
"Mrs. Calder was the mother of 13 children, six sons and two dau
ghters surviving as follows: Orson B.,Mrs. Ada Winder, Bhrum B
. Pentha, Wallace, and Mrs. Dora Cook of Vernal. Rebeau of Sal
t Lake and Bruce of Roosevelt. Her husband died a number of yea
rs ago. "Speakers at the service were William H. Riddoway, Hard
en Bennion andJoseph A Cornwall, the latter two being from Sal
t Lake."
