John French, b abt 1637 moved to Topsfield, Mas by 1664 and marr
ied Phebe Keyes. He built a house that is still standing the ol
des house of any French inAmerica. John's sons moved to enfiel
d and Norwich in connecticut and remained there a generation o
r two. Some Frences from the next generation were thefirst t
o head West, and later Frenches in this line kept moving, and pa
ssed through New York to Iowan, on to Kansas, Missouri, Indiana
, and Nebrasak.
He was a tailor, moved to Topsfield about 1664 and was admitte
d a commoner there in 1675. He took the oath of allegiance an
d fidelity 1678. Served as acorporal and clerk of lite local m
ilitary company. He served as a grand juror and also on tiral j
uries of the town. HDF

rly as March 1 1664/5 when a daughter born there, first mentione
d in town records on Dec 31, 1667, when land was laid outto Joh
n. How, "next John French bordering ujpon the Common" from tha
t time until 1697 his name is found frequently. He was chosen s
urveyor of highways, or fences, or both, seven time, tythingman
, three times, on jury at Ipswichy, three times, grand juryman
, three times commissioner on special errands to the "sheare Tow
ne" twice. He build a one story house about 1675, which befor
e 1798 was raised to two stories and enlarged. This is still st
anding and is known as the "French-Andrews" house located Howlet
t St, near the Dry Bridge (Topsfield Hist. Coll., Vol 8, p 22 vo
l 6 p 47)

John French and his wife were both members of the Church in Tops
field, in a list dated 1684. There are two stories ofher death
. "John French his wife drown herself May 13 1701. "Phebe Frenc
hdyed on ye 14th May 1701."
