Note

Obit 1640 of Lower Bairstow, Will 9 Mar 1639. lower Bairstow wa
s settled onjames Kinge by his father in 1632, the occasion bei
ng the marriage with MaryOldfied. After the death of Samuel Kin
ge Senr. James Kinge leased from his mother Grace Kinge, in 163
8 lands called the "Shepefeildes" the " stubbinge," and the "Lee
s," in Skircote, the latter having been in the family for nearl
y100 years. Grace Kinges will I give to my son James Kinge si
x silver spoons. All the residue of her estate Grace bequeathe
d to James. There is something pathetic about the disposition o
f his property by James Kinge for he seemsto have had a premoni
tion of early doom. So precise are the terms of his will, so ho
mely the descriptions of the various articles, that we can almos
t see the Squire of Lower Bairstow dressed in his best apparel
, knee breeches with silk garters, tied in a large bow knot, coa
t with his silver buttons, feathered hat and wide-topped boots
, sword by side, silver spurs on heel, and watch him mount by th
e "hoarsin steps" and ride through the grand old gateway with mo
unted servants behind him, as was the gentlemanly custom in "Goo
d Kingcharles' Golden Days". Monumental Inscription on a plaqu
e in Halifax ParishChurch. Also James his son (son of Samuel, w
ho died August 1638) may 1st 1640. Also Samuesl Son of the sai
d James Feb 5th 1674 from an article printed bythe Halifax Anti
quarian Society.
