June 11, 1924 - The shortest administration in Newfoundland hist
oryended when, after only 33 Days in power, Albert Edgar Hickma
n (born in GrandBank, Newfoundland, August 2, 1875), Newfoundla
nd's 17th prime minister, wasdefeated in a general elected by W
alter Monroe. Hickman had succeeded William Warren after Warren
's resignation.

Albert Edgar Hickman was born in Gran Bank in 1874. He complete
d his education in Mount Allison, New Brunswick.
Upon graduating,Albert worked with a fish exporting company bas
ed in Halifax. In 1905, hebecame a partner and started a bran
ch of this fish exporting business in St.John's. In 1914, he b
came sole owner of A.E. Hickman Company Limited. In the 1920's
, the company expanded its business into marine products, becomi
nga major supplier for marine supplies and marine engines. Alb
ert again expanded his business horizons in 1919, opening the Do
minion Atlantic Insurance County, Ltd. in 1923, he obtained the age
ncy for Ford Motor, Hudson and Essex cars, becoming the larges
t car distributor in Newfoundland. During this period,albert a
lso became a steamship agent for Munson Steamship co, starte
d a cement and lumber company and in 1934, opened a brewery.
Albert was very much a partner in business with other Newfoundla
nd business leaders, most especiallyC. C. Pratt and W.R. Goobie
. The three acquired and operated Steers Ltd. andthe Woods Can
dy Factory, now knowns as Purity Factory.
