Note

Wilfred left Lamaline as a youth of fourteen, shortly after th
e death of hismother Mary Susannah and remarriage of his fathe
r Robert John to his second wife Frances Ellen Bonnell, a Batte
n widow. Frances Ellen brought two duaghter by previous marriag
e to Robert's household, Ella and Muriel Batten, both pre-teens
. "Susannah's family literally fell apart after her death," sta
te surviving witnesses to the era of 1910s, and "...there probab
ly was no room for a youth of fourteeen..." Wilfred, who never i
n his later years wanted to talk about his youth in Lamaline, fi
rst went to Nova Soctia where he worked inmines and later manag
ed to go on to the state of Maine.
Here he worked in several shoe factories, got married and raise
d a family of five children. Foryears he resisted attempts o
f the editors to reveal details of his past in Newfoundland. On
ly on one occasion did he briefly relate his experience in Nov
a Scotia and on a boat that brought him to Maine. Wilfred die
d at an age of 81 and eight months, preceding his wife Harriet E
mma by two months. He left a legacy of an outstanding family ma
n, exemplary husband and father, lovedand respected by his desc
endants.
