Dear Mrs. Richardson, Just a note to say that I am still delaye
d in sending you a report. Family illness has slowed down my re
search as mytwin brother has been in hospital a month, having t
wo operations, and a spellin the Intensive Care Unit. He is no
w at home and is improving in health.
In trying to locate the correct date of death or burial of Joh
n Buckley the Land agent, I have written to the Verger of Oldha
m parish Church, to see if his local knowledge might help regard
ing where J.B. could have been buried. Iwrote to him over a mo
nth ago, and had no reply, so telephoned him, and he says he wil
l look into the matter. It seems to me that a search will hav
e tobe made in the deaths index post 3 Apl 1871 for John Buckle
y, and I had planned to write to the Oldham Registrar of death
s asKing for such a search, butfind that nationally, such peopl
e are on partial strike action over a pay claim, and are not mak
ing postal searches. So this means I shall have to writeto m
y agent in London. As you have not replied to my 19 Feb lette
r I thinkthat the name Squire Buckley is not familiar to you
. Yours Sincerely
19 Feb 1982
Dear Mrs. Richardson, Many thanks for your letter of 30 Sep las
t, and also the cheque for $181.00. I wrote to my London agen
t last Oct aksing him to obtain a death certificate of the Joh
n Buckley who died in 1896 and youwill see that the certificat
e was issued on 20 Oct last although it is only recently I recei
ved it from my agent. He has been ill.
It is strange that onthe death certificate the number in Thomps
on Lane is '2 off' and I do not know the meaning of such. Certa
inly this John Buckley is the same as the one mentioned on shee
t 3 of my 16 July 1981 report - the dates of death are the same
. He would have been born about 1842 so could not be the John B
uckley the Land Dealer who was 53 in the 1861 census. One wonde
rs if this John died (1896) was the one born before Elizabet
h - she marrying Henry Buckley in 1867.Does the name Squire Bu
ckley 'ring a bell'?

Dear Mrs. Richardson, Eventually I had a reply from the Verge
r of Oldham parish Church and hefound no record of the burial
s of Sussana Buckley or her husband John the Land agent in the r
egisters of the parish Church, or the chapelry of St. Peter's
. He said that St. James, another chapelry in Oldham parish wou
ld have their own records likewise he thought the above two ma
y have been buried in a local cemetary. I have not yet take act
ion on these last two suggestions.
Ihave had much corresPondence with my London agent, asKing fo
r a search for the death registration of Susannah Buckley know
n to be living in 1861. I am pleased to say that eventually thi
s record was found and I enclose the certificate. In the slante
d writing on the certificate it would seem that John Buckley's o
ccupation was a Sand Dealer, although I think the first letter i
s infact an 'L' and not 'S'.
So we know that John was still alive on 11 Jan 1868 but it has b
een difficult to isolate him in the many John Buckleys found
. Asearch has been made in the death indexes from the time o
f the 1871 census to Dec 1881. In this period seventy seven J.B
.s were found including fifteenin Oldham. The most likely one
s being June quarter 1874 Oldham aged 67
Dec quarter 1878 Oldham aged 71
I have asked my agent to obtain the 1874 certificate, but it ha
s not yet been sent. I would mention tht in the search my agen
t found a vital page missing in the Sep 1874 vol when searchin
g for John Buckley's death.
To help my London agent in the search in the 1881 census, I firs
t wrote to the librarian at Oldham library asKing if they coul
d send mea photostat showing Wrigley Street- they obliged,
