On Elizabeth & James wedding certificate, Robert Binns is liste
d as a Delverby occupation. on the 1881 census he is listed a
s living at Mounts Farm Headof House Widow, born in Warley, Hal
ifax Yorkshire and a farmer of 20 acres,Probate registered 30 J
une 1883 Executors Henry Oates Binns of Roilshead, son and Joh
n Binns of Roilshead. The will reads, Robert Binns - Value 611 8
s6d - Roilshead, Warley, Halifax, WRY - Farmer and Stone Delve
r - Died 4 May 1883 - Probate Registered 30 June 1883 - Executor
s Henry Oates Binns of Roilshead, Son and John Binns of Roilshea
d. It doesn't say if John is also Robert's son but in 1881 Joh
n appears to be living in Warley - 28 June 1976, 38 Huddersfiel

Dear Mrs. Richardson,
I am pleased to say that I have been able to locate all the requ
ired certificates, and these I enclose. I did have some doubt
s as to whether that for Elizabeth Binns' birth was correct, esp
ecially as in the 1851 census her place of birth wasgiven as th
e township of warley and her father described as a Farmer; bot
h these details are different in the birth certificate. Whe
n I called at theRegistry Office in Halifax and was told this i
nformation I said I would leave the certificate in abeyance a
s I found that Elizabeth's mother Hannah was called Barrett befo
re marriage. I then made a search in the marriages of Halifax pa
rish Church for this marriage, and was pleased to find the sam
e in 1832 with the confirmation that Hannah's maiden surname wa
s indeed Barrett. Hence I then obtained a birth certificate fo
r Elizabeth. Pellon in Ovenden townships is three miles Northea
st of Gleanings in Warley township. A subsequentsearch in th
e 1861 census of Warley showed the record of James & Elizabeth K
ing, and you will see that Elizabeth's birthplace is in fact lis
ted at Ovenden.
The search in the 1861 census also revealed that Elizabeth's fat
her - Robert Binns said he was born at Colne - in the 1851 censu
s he gave Burnley ashis place of birth. Burnley and Colne ar
e six miles apart, and both are inthe ancient parish of Whaley
, so one would have to search both places to be sure. The othe
r family found in the 1861 census was that of John Binns who wa
s a brother of the ancestral Elizabeth.
I am sorry to say that during the 1861 census search of Warle
y I found no King family (other than James & Elizabeth) as I ha
d hoped to locate that of William & Ann who were listed in 1851.
The birth certificate of James King tells us his mother's maide
n surname wasSharp, so I was forwarned when searching for the m
arriage of James' parents at Halifax parish Church. It was a lo
ng search, having to go back seven years. So it would seem tha
t Charles (17 in 1851) may not have been the eldest ofthe famil
y, and a search in the 1841 census of Warley migh show older chi
ldren.
I have searched the baptisms of the chapelries of Sowerby Bridg
e and also Sowerby for the family of Robert & Hannah Binns, bu
t it was found in neither, so I may be more fortunate in searchi
ng the baptisms of Luddenden - at which place I might also fin
d the christenings of William King, Hannah Barrettand Anne Shar
p. Yours sincerely, David Barron
