Hannah Howland, Swansea,Massachusetts (1637-1687) by Jack F. But
ler of LaJolla, CA
Hannah Howland was born c 1633 in Swansea (then part of the town
ship of Rehoboth) Massachusetts or, possibly, in Maine. She wa
s the second child of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, who wer
e passengers on the mayflower andwho were married c 1624.
Hannah married Jonathon Bosworth Jr on 6 Jul 1661 inthe townshi
p of Rehoboth. Hannah gave birth to ten children, all in Swanse
a.
Hannah and Jonathon must have gone to live in Colchester, in th
e township of Plymouth, because Plymouth records contain enrtrie
s for 16 September, 1663 and 27 December 1665 Granting land to J
onathon.
Before 1668, the family moved to Swansea (then called New Swanse
a), where Jonathon was one of the orginal signers and served a
s Constable and Surveyor of Highways.
Swansea was attacked during King Phillip's War of 1675-76, a per
iod when Hannah's childrenwould be growing up. The inhabitant
s fled to the fortified house of Rev. Miles, a Baptist minister
, and were defended by troops of the Massachusetts Bayand Plymo
uth Colonies. Eleven troopers were killed. Nothing is known ab
out the extent of civilian casualties.
When Hannah and family moved to Swansea, they embraced the Bapti
st faith that had an active following in that township. They pr
esumably shared in the persecutions inflicted on Baptists by th
eCongregationalists. Jonathon's father disinherited him for be
coming a Baptist, but seems to have later relented.
The Baptists'"..proceedings were deemed such an evil by the res
t of the inhabitants of the town, and of the colony generally, t
hat the court of Plymoth was called on to interfere. Each membe
rof this new Church was fined 5 pounds, prohibited from worshi
p for the spaceof one month, and they were advised to removed f
rom Rehoboth to some place where they might not prejudice any ex
isting Church. They accordingly moved to(what is now) Barringt
on, R.I." [Gazetterr of Mass. By John Hayward, pub 1846]
On 14 January, 1680 Jonathon Bosworth, Jr. was assigned a lot a
t "Rumstick", or Little Neck, Barrington, Rhode Island.
Jonathon died sometime between 10 May 1708 and 10 June `1717.
Hannah's last child, Jonathon was born on 22 September 1680. He
r date of death is not recorded. Believed to be c 1687.
